(Oncoloog) An oncologist is a doctor specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. You develop treatment plans using chemotherapy, radiation or immunotherapy and guide patients and their families through a difficult journey.
To become an oncologist, a university degree in Medicine (WO) is required, followed by a 6-year oncology specialization. You need VWO with the Nature & Health (N&G) profile, where mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology are particularly important. After your medical degree, you first complete basic training to become a basic doctor, after which you can start the oncology specialization training. Experience alone is not sufficient - the medical title and specialization are legally required to work as an oncologist.
As an oncologist, you have completed a long educational path: from basic doctor via the internal medicine specialization to oncology. You can advance to chief oncologist, department head or medical director of a hospital. Additionally, there are opportunities in research, teaching at medical faculties or consultancy for pharmaceutical companies. The field offers excellent prospects due to aging population and continuous innovations in cancer treatment.
The impact of AI on the oncologist role is significant. AI tools can accelerate diagnostic processes and improve precision in treatment plans, giving oncologists more time for patient-centered care. New skills, such as understanding AI analyses and data interpretation, become crucial. Job market prospects are mixed; while some routine tasks will be automated, the need for oncologists for complex decisions and empathetic interaction remains. Automation may lead to a shift in the role of oncologists, where they act more as coordinators of care.
