What does a Product Owner?

(Product Owner) As a Product Owner, you are the link between business, technology, and users. In a typical tech environment, you work closely with developers and other specialists to improve digital products step by step. You determine what the team builds and in what order, based on customer needs, data, and organizational goals. You translate ideas and wishes into a clear product backlog, write user stories, and set priorities so the team can focus on what delivers the most value. Daily, you coordinate with stakeholders like marketing, sales, and customers, and guide the team within an Agile/Scrum methodology. The role of Product Owner requires a mix of technical affinity and strong communication skills. You don't need to program yourself, but you understand how software development works and can effectively bridge technical details and the bigger picture. Within teams, the Product Owner is often a medior to senior role, with significant responsibility and influence on product direction. As a Product Owner, you combine overview, collaboration, and product vision. You ensure that technology, users, and business come together in solutions that truly make an impact.

Required Education

For the position of Product Owner, typically an HBO or university degree is required, preferably in a technical field such as Computer Science, Business Administration, or a comparable study direction. If you take the HAVO/VWO route, the Nature & Technology (N&T) profile is most suitable, where mathematics and possibly economics are important subjects. Although formal education is strongly preferred, relevant work experience in product development or project management and demonstrable knowledge of agile methodologies can sometimes compensate for a lower educational background.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As a Product Owner, you can often enter from roles such as Business Analyst, Project Manager, or Scrum Master, where you have already gained experience with stakeholder management and product processes. Your growth opportunities are excellent: you can advance to Head of Product, Product Manager, or Chief Product Officer positions. Many Product Owners also make the transition to consultancy or start their own product-driven business. The field has strong demand due to the growing focus on agile working and digital transformation in virtually all sectors.

AI Impact on the job

AI transforms the role of the Product Owner by automating data collection and analysis, enabling decisions to be made faster and more data-driven. New skills such as data analysis, knowledge of AI tools, and the ability to collaborate with technical teams are becoming increasingly important. Job market prospects are mixed: while some traditional tasks disappear, demand emerges for product owners with AI competencies. This offers opportunities for innovation but also requires continuous upskilling.
