What will you learn?

(Dans) The AD Dance is an intensive two-year program that prepares you for a professional career in the dance world. You develop your dance technique in various styles such as modern, jazz, ballet, street dance and theater dance, while also learning to choreograph and teach dance classes. In addition to practical dance skills, you take subjects like anatomy and physiology to prevent injuries, music theory to understand rhythm and timing, and theater history to place dance in context. The program distinguishes itself from a full HBO bachelor's degree through its direct focus on practical applications and quick entry into the job market. You work on concrete projects such as developing your own choreographies, giving workshops at schools, and organizing dance performances. Internships at dance companies, dance schools or cultural institutions are an essential part of the curriculum. This program is ideal for motivated dancers who want to turn their passion into a profession and quickly enter the job market.

Required Education

For admission to AD Dance you need at least an MBO-4 diploma, preferably in a creative field, or a HAVO/VWO diploma. The HAVO profile Culture & Society (C&M) fits best because this profile focuses on artistic subjects, cultural history and social developments that are relevant to the dance sector. Subjects like art, history and Dutch are valuable because they broaden your cultural background and develop your communication skills. Most programs use a practical admission test where you must demonstrate your dance skills in different styles, plus a motivation interview about your ambitions in the dance world. Alternative admission is possible through a portfolio where you document your dance experience, performances and any dance training, combined with an admission audition that assesses your technical level and artistic potential.

Career Prospects

After completion you can work as a dance teacher at dance schools, gyms or cultural centers, where starting salaries range between €1,800 and €2,400 gross per month. You can also work as a performer with smaller dance companies, in musicals, or as a freelance dancer for events and commercials. Other possibilities are positions as movement coach at physiotherapy practices, dance animator at holiday parks, or as choreographer for amateur theater groups. For further career growth, you can progress from your AD to the full HBO bachelor's Dance or Dance Teacher, which offers you more opportunities in secondary education or with professional companies with salaries up to €3,500 gross per month.

Impact of AI on this program

AI generates increasingly better visual content and designs, but the AD Dance sector revolves around human expression, imagination and authenticity. Artists who use AI as a tool strengthen their work. Originality and conceptual thinking become more important.
