What will you learn?

(Electronic Music) In the AD Electronic Music program, you learn all aspects of electronic music production, from creating beats and melodies to mixing and mastering complete tracks. You work intensively with professional software such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro and Pro Tools, and learn to work with hardware like synthesizers, drum machines and midi controllers. The program combines creative and technical skills: you develop your musical creativity while also learning about audio engineering, sound technology and the business side of the music industry. Practical projects are essential, such as producing your own EP, collaborating with artists, providing live performances and internships at record labels or production studios. This AD distinguishes itself from a full bachelor's degree through its practice-oriented approach where you start making music from day one and work on real assignments. The program is perfect for creative people with a passion for electronic music who want to quickly enter the job market as a producer, DJ or sound technician.

Required Education

For admission to AD Electronic Music, you need an MBO level 4 diploma, preferably in a creative field such as Media, Design or AV production, or a HAVO/VWO diploma. The HAVO profile Culture & Society (C&M) fits best because this profile combines creativity, culture and communication, which is essential for the music industry. Economics & Society (E&M) is also suitable due to subjects like economics and management that are relevant for the entrepreneurial aspect of music production. Specific subjects like music, arts or media are very valuable, but not always mandatory. Many schools use a motivational interview or portfolio assessment where you can demonstrate your musical interest and any experience with music production. Alternative admission is possible through a 21+ scheme where you are admitted based on work experience and motivation, or through an entrance exam that tests your practical and creative skills.

Career Prospects

After the AD Electronic Music program, you can immediately start working as a music producer, creating beats and tracks for artists or for commercial use in advertisements and games. You can work as a DJ for clubs, festivals or events, or as a sound technician in studios, at live performances or for media productions. Other possibilities include positions as audio editor at radio or TV stations, sound designer for games or films, or as an independent producer releasing your own music. You find work at record labels, production studios, event agencies, media companies or start your own production company. Starting salaries range between €1,800-€2,500 gross per month, depending on your specialization and employer. After several years of experience, you can advance to senior producer, creative director or studio owner. For further development, you can progress to a full HBO bachelor's degree such as Music & Technology or Creative Business, which increases your chances for management positions.

Impact of AI on this program

AI offers AD Electronic Music new possibilities for composition, production and mixing. AI generates music, but artistic expression and live performance remain uniquely human. Musicians who master AI as an instrument have an advantage.
