What will you learn?

(Built Environment) In the AD Built Environment, you learn everything about designing, realizing and managing buildings and infrastructure in the built environment. You develop practical skills in technical drawing with CAD software such as AutoCAD and Revit, construction, installation technology and project management. Subjects like building constructions, material knowledge, sustainable construction, spatial planning and real estate management are central. What makes this AD unique compared to a full HBO bachelor's is the strong focus on direct labor market orientation and practical applications. From the first year, you work on realistic projects in collaboration with construction companies, architectural firms and municipalities. Internships at contractors, consulting firms or housing corporations are an essential part of the program. The program is perfectly suited for MBO graduates with technical interest who want to quickly advance to a responsible position in the construction sector, but also for HAVO graduates who want to learn in a practice-oriented way without completing a long theoretical bachelor's degree.

Required Education

For admission to the AD Built Environment, you need at least an MBO level 4 diploma in a technical field such as Construction, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering, or a HAVO diploma. For HAVO, the Nature & Technology (N&T) profile fits best due to the strong focus on physics, mathematics and technical subjects that are essential for construction calculations and structural engineering. The Nature & Health (N&G) profile is also suitable due to the mathematical component. For MBO graduates from a non-technical field, additional requirements may apply, such as demonstrating sufficient knowledge of mathematics and physics. Some institutions require a motivation letter in which you explain your interest in the construction and real estate sector. A VWO diploma also provides access, although VWO graduates more often choose a full HBO bachelor's degree. Alternative admission routes exist for people with work experience in the construction sector through an admission examination or preparatory program.

Career Prospects

After completing the AD Built Environment, you can work as a junior construction project manager, draftsman-constructor, construction consultant, real estate manager or estimator at contracting companies. You work at construction companies, architectural firms, consulting firms, housing corporations, municipal services or real estate developers. Starting salaries range between €2,200 and €2,800 gross per month, depending on the specific position and region. Career advancement opportunities are excellent: with a few years of work experience, you can grow into a project manager, construction inspector or independent consultant. Additionally, you can use your AD diploma to transfer to the third year of an HBO bachelor's Built Environment, allowing you to obtain a full HBO bachelor's degree in one additional year and gain access to even more specialized positions such as architect or structural engineer.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has a growing influence on AD Built Environment. Routine tasks are being automated, while complex decision-making, creativity and human contact are becoming more important. Knowledge of AI tools and data literacy is a growing competency in this field.
