What will you learn?

(Fashion Business Professional) In the AD Fashion Business Professional program, you learn all aspects of the fashion business, from purchasing strategies to retail management and from trend analysis to visual merchandising. You develop skills in commercial product planning, where you learn how to compile a fashion collection that is both creative and commercially successful. Additionally, you study consumer behavior in the fashion world, learn to negotiate with suppliers, and develop marketing strategies specifically for fashion brands. The program combines subjects such as fashion buying, retail analytics, brand management, and sustainable fashion business. What makes this AD unique compared to a full HBO bachelor's degree is the intensive focus on direct applicability in the fashion industry within two years, with many hands-on projects such as setting up your own pop-up store, developing a retail concept, or conducting market research for existing fashion brands. You work on real assignments from companies and do internships at fashion retailers, wholesalers, or fashion brands. This program is ideal for those who want to quickly advance to a management position in the fashion industry and enjoy the dynamics of retail and commerce.

Required Education

For admission, you need at least an MBO-4 diploma, preferably in a related field such as Fashion & Clothing, Retail, Marketing, or Commerce, or a HAVO or VWO diploma. The HAVO profile Culture & Society (C&M) fits best with this program because this profile contains subjects such as management & organization and social sciences, which are essential for understanding business operations and consumer behavior in the fashion world. Economics & Society (E&M) is also very suitable due to its strong economic and business foundation. In secondary school, economics, mathematics, and Dutch are particularly important, where economics prepares you for commercial aspects and mathematics helps with retail analyses and budgeting. Some schools require a motivation letter in which you explain your interest in fashion and retail, and possibly an intake interview. For those who don't directly meet the requirements, there is often a 21+ test or an entrance exam, where work experience in retail or fashion plays an important role in the assessment.

Career Prospects

After completion, you can immediately start working as an assistant buyer, visual merchandiser, store manager, category manager, or junior brand manager at fashion chains such as H&M, Zara, de Bijenkorf, or Dutch retailers such as WE Fashion. You work in various sectors: fast fashion, luxury retail, online fashion platforms, fashion wholesale, or at fashion start-ups and sustainable fashion brands. Starting salaries range between €2,200 and €2,800 gross per month, depending on the position and company, with good advancement opportunities to management positions such as store manager (€3,000-€3,500) or buyer (€3,500-€4,500) within a few years. Progression to a full HBO bachelor's degree is possible, often with exemptions for already completed subjects, allowing you to complete a bachelor's in Commercial Economics, International Business, or Fashion & Textile Technologies in approximately one and a half additional years.
