What will you learn?

(Groene Leefomgeving) In the AD Green Living Environment program, you learn everything about the management and design of natural areas, parks and rural regions. You gain extensive knowledge about ecology, nature management, water management and sustainable land development. Subjects such as botany, soil science, water management, GIS applications and nature legislation are central to the curriculum. You learn practical skills such as drawing up management plans, conducting ecological inventories and supervising nature restoration projects. What makes this AD unique compared to a full bachelor's degree is the intense focus on direct practical application and faster entry into the job market. You work on concrete projects such as developing ecological connection zones, monitoring biodiversity and advising on green urban development. Internships at nature organizations, water boards, municipalities and consultancy firms form an essential part of your education. This program is perfect for you if you love nature, enjoy working practically and want to directly contribute to a sustainable living environment.

Required Education

For admission to the AD Green Living Environment, you need at least an MBO-4 diploma in a green field such as Green Space, Forest and Nature Management, or Land Development, or a HAVO diploma. The HAVO profile Nature & Health (N&G) fits best with this program because you have already been introduced to biology and chemistry, subjects that are essential for understanding ecosystems and soil management. The Nature & Technology (N&T) profile is also excellently suited due to the technical aspects of water management and GIS applications. In secondary school, especially biology, chemistry and mathematics B are relevant, because you need this knowledge for ecological analyses and calculations in water management. Most universities of applied sciences do not require additional admission requirements or entrance tests. Alternative admission is possible via a state examination or for 21+ students via an admission assessment where you demonstrate that you have the level to successfully complete the program.

Career Prospects

After your AD, you can immediately start working as a nature manager at nature organizations such as Natuurmonumenten or Staatsbosbeheer, or as a green space manager at municipalities and provinces. Water boards also offer excellent opportunities as an ecological advisor or water manager, as well as consultancy firms for spatial planning and environment where you can start as a junior consultant. Typical starting salaries range between €2,200 and €2,800 gross per month, depending on your employer and specific position. Your career advancement opportunities are excellent: you can progress to the full HBO bachelor's degree in Applied Biology, Forest and Nature Management or Spatial Planning and Planning to reach specialist roles such as nature development project manager, green space policy officer or senior ecologist at large consultancy firms.
