What will you learn?

(ICT Internet of Things) In the AD ICT Internet of Things you learn to develop smart devices and systems that can communicate with each other and the internet. You gain practical knowledge about sensors, microcontrollers like Arduino and Raspberry Pi, wireless communication and data analysis. Subjects such as embedded programming, network protocols, database management and cybersecurity for IoT devices are central to the curriculum. You learn to program in languages like Python, C++ and JavaScript, and work with cloud platforms such as AWS IoT and Azure IoT. This two-year AD is more compact than a full HBO bachelor's degree and focuses specifically on the practical implementation of IoT solutions rather than theoretical computer science. You work on realistic projects such as smart thermostats, industrial monitoring systems or smart city applications. Internships at companies that develop or implement IoT solutions form an important part of your education. The AD is perfect for MBO-4 graduates who want to quickly enter the job market in the growing IoT sector, but also for HAVO students who want to learn in a practice-oriented way without the full duration of a regular HBO bachelor's degree.

Required Education

For admission to the AD ICT Internet of Things you need at least an MBO level 4 diploma in a technical or ICT-related field such as Application Developer, Media Technology or Electrical Engineering. HAVO students are also welcome, where the Nature & Technology (N&T) profile fits best due to the mathematical and physics foundation needed for embedded systems and sensor technology. The Nature & Health (N&G) profile can also be suitable if you have taken mathematics B. VWO students can also enter, although they often choose a full HBO bachelor's degree. Good grades in mathematics and physics are important, because you work a lot with calculations around sensors, electronics and networks. Some universities of applied sciences organize an orientation day or introductory interview to test your motivation and affinity with technology. If you don't have a suitable prior education, you can still be admitted through a bridging program or 21+ test, provided you have demonstrable work experience in the ICT or technical sector.

Career Prospects

After obtaining your AD ICT Internet of Things you can immediately start working as an IoT Developer, Smart Systems Engineer, or Embedded Software Developer at technology companies, industrial automation companies or consultancy firms. You work in sectors such as smart manufacturing, building management, healthcare (medical IoT) or automotive (connected cars). Typical starter salaries range between €2,400 and €3,000 gross per month, depending on the sector and region. With several years of experience you can grow to Senior IoT Engineer, Technical Consultant or Project Manager for IoT implementations. Progression to a full HBO bachelor's degree such as Technical Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Business IT & Management is possible, where you often receive exemptions for already completed subjects and can graduate within 1.5 to 2 years.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is fundamentally transforming AD ICT Internet of Things. Programming is shifting toward AI-assisted development with tools like GitHub Copilot. Students must learn to collaborate with AI, master prompt engineering and focus on complex problem-solving that AI cannot automate. The demand for IT professionals remains high, but the work is changing dramatically.
