What will you learn?

(Interieurvormgever) As an Interior Design student, you learn to design and furnish spaces that are both functional and aesthetically appealing. You develop skills in spatial design, color theory, material knowledge, and working with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite. The program combines creative subjects like drawing and visualization with technical aspects such as construction, installations, and regulations. You also learn project management, cost calculation, and client communication. What makes this AD unique compared to a full bachelor's degree is the strong practical orientation and shorter study duration, allowing you to enter the job market faster with concrete skills. During the program, you work on real assignments for companies and private clients, such as redesigning office spaces, living rooms, or commercial spaces. Internships at interior design consultancies, architectural firms, or furniture stores are an essential component. This program is perfect for creative people with a sense of space and color who enjoy hands-on work and want to start quickly in the interior design industry.

Required Education

For admission to the AD Interior Design program, you need at least an MBO-4 diploma, preferably in a related field such as Spatial Design, Furniture and Interior Design, or Graphic Design. You can also enter directly with a HAVO diploma, where the Culture & Society (C&M) profile fits best due to the creativity and culture component, but Economics & Society (E&M) can also be suitable through entrepreneurial skills. VWO students are often overqualified but welcome. Subjects such as drawing, handicrafts, general arts, or history are very relevant for developing visual insight. Some schools require a portfolio with your own creative work or an intake interview to assess your motivation and creative potential. Alternative admission is possible with an MBO-3 diploma plus relevant work experience in the creative sector, or through a 21+ test where your life experience and motivation are assessed instead of formal diplomas.

Career Prospects

After graduation, you can immediately start working as a junior interior designer at interior design consultancies, architectural firms, or design studios, where you assist in designing residential and work spaces. You can also work as an interior advisor at furniture stores, home furnishing shops, or DIY stores, where you help customers choose and combine furniture and accessories. Many graduates start as independent interior advisors for private clients or small businesses. Starting salaries range between €2,200-€2,800 gross per month, depending on the employer and region. Career advancement to senior interior designer, project manager, or your own design firm is very possible with several years of experience. An important advantage is that after your AD you can continue studying to the third year of the HBO bachelor's degree in Spatial Design or related programs, allowing you to broaden your knowledge and pursue higher management positions.

Impact of AI on this program

AI accelerates the design process in AD Interior Design with generative designs and 3D visualization. Creative vision, client relationships, and spatial insight remain essential. AI becomes a powerful tool for faster iteration.
