What will you learn?

(Maintenance) In the AD program Maintenance you learn everything about maintaining, repairing and optimizing technical installations and machines in various industrial environments. You develop practical skills in mechanics, electrical engineering, hydraulics, pneumatics and process control, where you learn to work with modern maintenance techniques such as condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. Subjects like maintenance management, fault analysis, mechanical engineering and electrical systems form the foundation of your education. What makes this AD unique compared to a full HBO bachelor's degree is the direct focus on practical applications and hands-on experience, making you directly employable as a maintenance technician after two years. During the program you work on realistic projects such as creating maintenance plans, analyzing machine performance and performing preventive maintenance in real business environments. Additionally, you complete internships at industrial companies where you gain experience with different maintenance systems and philosophies. This program is perfect for you if you are technically minded, enjoy practical work and want to make a direct contribution to the reliability and efficiency of industrial processes.

Required Education

For admission to the AD program Maintenance you need at least an MBO level 4 diploma in a technical field such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics, or a HAVO diploma with the right subjects. With a HAVO background, the N&T profile (Nature and Technology) fits best, because this profile contains mathematics B, physics and often chemistry - subjects that are essential for understanding mechanical and electrical systems in maintenance technology. The N&G profile can also be suitable if you have taken physics, although you may need additional training in mathematics. Specific subjects that are important for success in this program are mathematics (minimum B-level), physics for understanding mechanical principles and preferably chemistry for material knowledge. Some schools have additional admission requirements such as a motivation interview or practical test to assess your technical interest and aptitude. Alternative admission routes exist through relevant work experience in technical functions or by completing a 21+ test for adults without formal qualifications.

Career Prospects

After completing the AD Maintenance you can work as a maintenance technician, breakdown mechanic, maintenance engineer or planned maintenance mechanic in sectors such as petrochemicals, food industry, energy generation, manufacturing industry and hospitals. You work at companies like Shell, Unilever, DSM, Tata Steel, various hospitals or technical service providers that outsource maintenance. As a starter you can expect a salary between €2,800 and €3,500 gross per month, depending on the sector and region, with good growth opportunities towards management positions or specialization roles. Within a few years you can advance to positions such as maintenance coordinator, maintenance supervisor or reliability engineer, where salaries can reach €4,500-€5,500 gross per month. For further development you can progress to the full HBO bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Industrial Engineering, where you often receive exemptions for competencies already achieved from your AD program.

Impact of AI on this program
