What will you learn?

(Maintenance en Mechanics) In the AD program Maintenance and Mechanics, you learn everything about maintaining, repairing and optimizing technical installations and machines in industry. You develop skills in mechanics, electrical engineering, pneumatics, hydraulics and computer technology, where you learn to detect malfunctions and perform preventive maintenance. Practical subjects such as welding, turning, milling and working with modern diagnostic systems form an important part of your education. What makes this AD unique compared to a full HBO bachelor's degree is the strong focus on direct practical applicability, with lots of hands-on training in workshops and laboratories. You work on realistic projects such as overhauling engines, installing control systems and performing condition monitoring. Internships at industrial companies, technical service providers or maintenance companies are mandatory and offer direct work experience. This program is ideal for you if you have technical insight, enjoy working practically, and want to quickly enter the job market as a maintenance technician with a solid theoretical foundation.

Required Education

For admission to the AD Maintenance and Mechanics program, you need at least an MBO level 4 diploma in a technical field such as Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering, or a HAVO diploma. The HAVO profile Nature & Technology (N&T) fits best with this program because you have had mathematics B, physics and chemistry there, subjects that are essential for understanding mechanical and electrical systems. The Nature & Health (N&G) profile is also suitable if you have had mathematics B and physics in your package. Specific subjects that are important for this program are mathematics (minimum level B), physics and preferably chemistry, because these form the basis for technical calculations and understanding material properties. There are usually no additional admission tests required, but some universities of applied sciences do organize an informative intake to check if you have technical affinity. Alternative admission is possible via a 21+ test for adults without formal prior education but with relevant work experience in technology.

Career Prospects

After obtaining your AD Maintenance and Mechanics, you can immediately start working as a maintenance technician, troubleshooting mechanic, service technician or maintenance engineer at industrial companies in sectors such as chemicals, food industry, automotive, energy and production. You work at large industrial companies such as ASML, DSM, Shell, or at specialized maintenance companies and technical service providers. As a starter, you can expect a salary between €2,800 and €3,400 gross per month, depending on the sector and region. The advancement opportunities are excellent: you can progress to positions such as maintenance coordinator, reliability engineer or technical service team leader, with salaries that can reach €4,500-5,500 gross per month. Additionally, you can expand your AD to a full HBO bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics in one year, which further enhances your opportunities for management and engineering positions.
