What will you learn?

(Software Development) In the AD Software Development program, you learn practical programming and software development. You gain hands-on experience with popular programming languages like Java, Python, C# and JavaScript, and work with modern frameworks and development environments. The program combines technical subjects like databases, web development, mobile app development and software engineering with project management and teamwork. What makes this AD unique compared to a full bachelor's degree is the intense focus on directly applicable skills and the shorter study duration of two years. From day one, you work on real projects for companies and do an extensive internship in your second year at a software development company. The program is perfect for you if you want to enter the job market quickly as a junior developer, are practically minded and prefer concrete programming over studying lots of theory.

Required Education

For admission to the AD Software Development program, you need at least an MBO-4 diploma in a technical field like ICT, or a HAVO/VWO diploma. With HAVO/VWO, the N&T (Nature and Technology) profile fits best, because there you already get acquainted with computer science and mathematics that are essential for programming. The N&G (Nature and Health) profile is also suitable if you have taken mathematics B. Mathematics is important for logical thinking and algorithms, while computer science in secondary school provides a good foundation for programming languages and digital literacy. Some universities of applied sciences require a minimum grade for mathematics or computer science. If you completed a different profile or have no computer science experience, you can often take a preparatory course or an admission test to demonstrate your suitability.

Career Prospects

After graduation, you can immediately start working as a junior software developer, front-end developer, back-end developer or full-stack developer at software companies, IT departments of large organizations or as a freelancer. You work in sectors like fintech, e-commerce, gaming, healthcare technology or at consultancy firms that develop custom software. As a starter, you can expect a salary between €2,200-€2,800 gross per month, depending on the region and company. There are plenty of growth opportunities: you can advance to senior developer, lead developer or project manager, or you can specialize in areas like cybersecurity, data science or mobile development. Many graduates also choose to complete their bachelor's degree through an accelerated route, allowing them to obtain their HBO diploma in one additional year.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is fundamentally transforming AD Software Development. Programming is shifting toward AI-assisted development with tools like GitHub Copilot. Students must learn to collaborate with AI, master prompt engineering, and focus on complex problem-solving that AI cannot automate. The demand for IT professionals remains high, but the work is changing dramatically.
