What will you learn?

(Tuin- en Landschapsinrichting) In the Associate Degree program in Garden and Landscape Design, you learn everything about designing, constructing, and maintaining green outdoor spaces. You delve into subjects like garden design, plant science, soil cultivation, paving, water management, and the use of machinery and tools. Technical drawing, material knowledge, and cost calculations are also extensively covered. This two-year program distinguishes itself from a full HBO bachelor's degree through its strong practical focus: you work directly on concrete projects and immediately develop applicable skills. You carry out real assignments for clients, from designing private gardens to setting up public green facilities. Internships at landscaping companies, municipalities, or green specialists are an essential part of your education. The program is ideal for practically-minded students who enjoy working outdoors, want to combine creativity with technical skills, and wish to enter the job market quickly.

Required Education

For admission to this Associate Degree program, you need at least an MBO level 4 diploma, preferably in a green field such as Green Space or Horticulture, or a HAVO diploma. As a HAVO student, the Nature & Health profile fits best, as you already gain knowledge about biology and physics that is relevant for plant science and technical aspects of horticulture. The Nature & Technology profile is also very suitable due to the technical component. Mathematics and physics are important subjects because you calculate a lot with surfaces, volumes, and constructions. Dutch is essential for communication with clients and writing quotes. At some schools there are no additional admission requirements, but practical experience in the green sector is often valued. As alternative admission, you can be accepted with an MBO level 3 diploma plus relevant work experience or through a 21+ test.

Career Prospects

After completion, you can immediately start working as an executive gardener, garden designer for smaller projects, green manager at municipalities, or project leader at landscaping or green facility companies. You work in sectors such as private horticulture, public green spaces, landscape architecture, and green management. Starting salaries range between €2,200 and €2,800 gross per month, depending on your employer and specialization. You can grow into positions as head executive, project manager, or start your own landscaping business.
