What will you learn?

(Tuinbouwmanagement) In the AD Horticulture Management program, you learn everything about running a modern horticultural business, from greenhouse cultivation to open field vegetable production. You develop practical management skills through subjects like business management, financial management, crop planning, and personnel management. Additionally, you gain in-depth knowledge of plant physiology, crop protection, climate control, and sustainable production techniques. What makes this AD unique compared to a full HBO bachelor's degree is the direct focus on practical management instead of research and theory. You work on real cases such as creating cultivation plans, cost price calculations, and optimizing greenhouse climate. During internships at horticultural companies, nurseries, or suppliers, you directly apply your knowledge and build a professional network. The program is perfect for practically-minded students who want to quickly start working as a horticulture manager, team leader, or business manager in the green sector.

Required Education

For admission to AD Horticulture Management, you need at least an MBO level 4 diploma in a green field such as Horticulture and Agriculture, or a HAVO/VWO diploma. With HAVO/VWO, the N&G profile (Nature and Health) fits best, because you will have studied biology and chemistry which are essential for plant physiology and crop protection. The N&T profile (Nature and Technology) is also suitable due to the technical aspects of modern horticulture such as automation and climate control. Mathematics and Dutch at sufficient level are mandatory for all profiles. Some universities of applied sciences organize an intake interview to test your motivation and practical experience. As alternative admission, you can also be admitted with an MBO level 3 diploma plus relevant work experience through an admission test or a 21+ test for adult students without a diploma.

Career Prospects

After your AD Horticulture Management, you can immediately start working as assistant business manager, cultivation manager, or production coordinator at greenhouse horticultural companies, mushroom farms, or open field vegetable companies. You find work at large horticultural enterprises, cooperatives like FloraHolland, or at suppliers of seeds, fertilizers, and greenhouse equipment. The starting salary ranges between €2,200 and €2,800 per month, depending on the company and your specialization. With experience, you advance to positions such as business manager (€3,500-4,500), account manager at horticultural suppliers, or advisor at extension organizations. For further career development, you can progress to the third year of an HBO bachelor's in Horticulture & Agriculture or International Horticulture Management, which allows you to pursue international management positions or your own business.

Impact of AI on this program

AI brings precision farming and smart monitoring to AD Horticulture Management. Drones, sensors, and data models optimize production. Subject knowledge, entrepreneurship, and hands-on experience remain the foundation.
