What will you learn?

(Educatief Professional Beroepsonderwijs) In the AD Educational Professional Vocational Education program, you learn to perform teaching and supervisory tasks within secondary vocational education (MBO). You develop didactic skills to transfer subject knowledge to MBO students and learn to create various teaching methods and learning environments. The program combines pedagogical theory with practical skills such as classroom management, developing lesson plans, and guiding students with different learning needs. You delve into topics such as vocational pedagogy, educational science, communication, and the use of digital learning tools. What makes this AD unique compared to a full teacher training bachelor's degree is the specific focus on vocational education and the shorter study duration, allowing you to enter the job market faster. Practice-oriented projects include developing teaching materials, setting up practice-based learning activities, and extensive internships at MBO institutions where you actually teach under supervision. The program is suitable for people with an affinity for education who want to work in a practice-oriented way and guide young adults in their professional development.

Required Education

For admission to the AD Educational Professional Vocational Education program, you need an MBO level 4 diploma, preferably in a field that aligns with the subject area you want to teach later, such as technology, healthcare, economics, or creative subjects. You can also be admitted with a HAVO or VWO diploma. For HAVO students, the Culture & Society (C&M) profile is most suitable because this profile contains subjects such as pedagogy, social sciences, and Dutch that directly connect to the educational aspects of the program. Relevant subjects in secondary school are Dutch (for communication skills), social studies (for understanding social processes), and preferably experience with internships or volunteer work with young people. Some universities of applied sciences require a motivation interview or assessment to test your suitability for education. Alternative admission pathways consist of an entrance exam for people without the right preliminary education but with relevant work experience in education or youth guidance.

Career Prospects

After completing the AD, you can work as a teaching assistant, practical supervisor, or instructor within MBO institutions, providing support to qualified teachers and independently conducting practical lessons. You can also work as a trainer or course leader at corporate training programs, ROCs, or private educational institutions that offer professionally oriented courses. Starting salaries range between €2,200 and €2,800 gross per month, depending on the institution and your experience. Growth opportunities include obtaining a full HBO bachelor's degree in teacher training by using your AD diploma as entry into the third year of a regular teacher training program or subject-specific teacher education, allowing you to become a fully qualified teacher with higher salary and more responsibilities.
